Architectural decoration in the overpass at the intersection of Ngo Quyen Street and National Highway No5 – Hai Duong City

With the goal of becoming a “healthy, dynamic, and cultural” city by 2050, Hai Duong city is gradually undergoing noteworthy transformations in various aspects, including urban infrastructure and landscape. However, these transformations only occur in some places, lack of overall vision, which limits the expansion of local culture.

In Eden Landscape’s opinion, in provinces and cities in general and Hai Duong city in particular, the urban identity is shown in many aspects. Among them, traffic intersections are not only infrastructure but also urban resources that contribute to the city’s landscape.

“We expect the designs in Hai Duong having Hai Duong’s characteristics, which strongly identify the city.”

The Ngo Quyen – National Highway No5 overpass is a crucial intersection, the central gateway to the city with high traffic density from multiple directions. However, the first architectural proposal was quite simple and lacked impression. Therefore, Eden Landscape proposed a new decoration for the overpass. The challenge was to balance between the aesthetics and the technical requirements. Limitations in terms of weight and space were both a challenge and an opportunity. Without changing the structure of the overpass, the design focus on elements that created landmarks, they are bridge rails, lighting system, and vegetation.

The bridge rails remind of wave movement, combined with silver-colored decorative panels to create a sparkling effect when illuminated by the sun. It becomes even more vibrant at night thanks to the lighting system. For passersby, the project leaves an impression with its undulating shape resembling a couple of golden dragons or a myriad of waves. For Hai Duong citizens, the decoration of the overpass recalls the origin of the city’s name from the first time – “the sunlight in the East Sea.”

“Although the project has a contemporary spirit, the feeling it brings still Hai Duong.”

Urban art is not just about embellishing a region but also a trend and a standard for modern cities, like how Hai Duong city is being shaped. The project plays as a city landscape landmarks, providing evidence for step by step change in the transportation infrastructure system in the city and the capital region as a whole.
